The New England Patriots: You Wish Your Team Did That.

"I'm tired of seeing the Pats in the Super Bowl every year."

"Tom Brady sold his soul to the devil."

"Brady just doesn't have the arm talent anymore."

"I hate the Patriots."

All of these are comments I heard while watching the Super Bowl this past Sunday. Even given that most of these comments were uttered by Pittsburgh Steelers fans, I just don't get it. If you say you "hate" the Patriots, I just don't understand why you're lying to yourself. Any fan in their right mind would want the kind of success the patriots have had over the last 18 seasons.

Tom Brady. How can you hate the Patriots for taking a chance on a lanky, unathletic quarterback, with very little pedigree and maybe the worst combine for QB at the time and he became the greatest quarterback ever? You can't, you're jealous, you wish your team did that.

Julian Edelman. How can you hate the Patriots for turning an under-sized, under recruited MAC quarterback into one of the greatest playoff wide receivers ever, and a Super Bowl MVP? You can't, you're jealous, you wish your team did that.

Rob Gronkowski. How can you hate the Patriots for taking a chance with a second round pick on a tight end who was so hurt coming out of college, he could barely participate at the combine, and he became one of the best tight ends of all time? You cant, you're jealous, you wish your team did that.

Now you say you hate Bill Belichick because he's a "cheater". Hmmm interesting.

Deflategate? Belichick had nothing to do with the footballs, even if they were deflated, the Patriots won by 38, the air in the footballs played very little importance on that day.

Spygate? At the time of Spygate, rules surrounding sideline taping were up for interpretation. Even some other NFL coaches at the time weren't sure what was and what wasn't legal. Belichick stated he believed he was operating within the rules as long as the tape was not used during the same game. Now, have you ever wondered why offensive and defensive coordinators cover their mouths with their play sheets, its because video taping sidelines isn't illegal. Today the NFL provides a space for each team to record the other sideline, although recording outside of this area is illegal. which is what the Patriots did in 2007, they recorded the Jets sideline from their bench. After reading up on Spygate, I think it was more of an misinterpretation of the rules, than deliberately cheating.

Bill Belichick. How can you hate the Patriots for hiring Belichick, at the time he was easily the best defensive mind in the game, the hottest prospect for a head coaching job and coming off a great stint as defensive coordinator for the Jets. Not to mention, at the time he already had 25 YEARS experience coaching in the NFL? You can't, you're jealous, you wish your team did that.

So if you don't hate the Head Coach or the offense, you must hate the defense?

Now that is super confusing because besides Devin McCourty, the Patriots don't really have a superstar on defense, and even calling McCourty a superstar is a stretch. They aren't big name players, but they consistently make big time plays. Now I will admit in the early 2000's the Patriots had some all time defenses, but today, to have mostly relative unknowns or forgotten abouts on their defense and to hold one of the leagues top offensives and one of the leagues top offensive minds in Sean McVay, to 3 points when they had two weeks to prepare, is utterly remarkable. How can you hate the Patriots for that? You can't, you're jealous, you wish your team did that?

How can you hate the Patriots for making it to four and being 3-1 in the Super Bowl over the past five years. While being one of if not the greatest professional sports dynasty of all time?

You can't.

You're jealous.

You wish your team did that.
